Wc3NewbieMapper-to-Wc3CompetentMapper v0.64a released!

Post by Ricky_Honejasi »

Wc3NewbieMapper-to-Wc3CompetentMapper v0.64a released!

You can get it here (with link actually working).

This is a tutorial pack in progress which is intended for total newbies to learn Warcraft 3's editor small step by small step. However, the major difference is the main tutorial content is made in the more practical map form rather than text form. The tutorial maps are intended to be played first then opened to learn how it was done.

While it mostly focus on the Trigger Editor, it has learning content about the various other parts of Warcraft 3 such as modding and cinematics. In addition, it has full open source maps which can be learned from and edited at their leisure as long they give credit to the original author.

"Show-Off" maps are also included with the main intention of showing what can be done with the editor or to show custom content such as models.

Here's a list of this tutorial pack's content.

Finally, since it is a tutorial pack in progress, you can help it in various ways not limited to doing content.

You can see the various methods to help it by clicking this link.

Re: Wc3NewbieMapper-to-Wc3CompetentMapper v0.60a released!

Post by Ricky_Honejasi »

There was a slight update.

====v0.60a changes====

Noticed that the information to cut the delays in the Unit Editor for creating new
units was wrong. The information in question was in maps 0-1 to 0-4 and 1-1.

It was corrected in v0.60a. My apologies to anyone that was mislead with the erroneous information in v0.60.

====================

I might as well take the opportunity to ask the following : If you have WorldEdit questions, feel free to ask since there can be a tutorial map to answer it and explain it in detail.

Bumped since I believe there are more lurker activity in general and those tutorials could be easily missed in the warcraft 3 forum.

Alright, if you would like me to expand on it, do ask me.

I mostly stopped a considerable while ago since I had no feedback at all and since there were almost no newbie lurking around (and many of us are veterans knows quite a long bit in WC3's editor already).

EDIT : Btw, if you find some tutorial maps that seems to be "missing" in WC3, you need to ensure your total path isn't too long since there are sub-folders and most of the maps have rather long names on the top of it. Just creating a folder called "RickyTutorials" in your maps folder and extract everything in it should make the path length fine for every map for WC3 to detect correctly.

After checking the tutorials, I would like your feedback about them since the best feedback would actually come from someone who is truly new to WorldEdit.

There are always some small things that can be hard to understand at first that can be hard to remember/explain for the tutorials when you become so used to it despite trying the most possible to have a newbie mindset when making the tutorials.

EDIT :

One that I completely forgot back then that just crossed my mind right now : include some note in the earliest tutorial maps to update WC3 to the latest version since some newbies doesn't connect to b.net at all for updates and thus they stay with non-expansion v1.00 or expansion v1.07 instead of the latest version of v1.21. It's important since some of the WorldEdit features depends on higher game versions.

sorry for the delay, too much studies :s
well, the tutorial was helpful, i tested few things, and were most succesful.
what i found really nice was the spaceship mini game- brilliant ^^
however, few tutorials i was not sure what to do with, if i needed to do anything, i guess they were very short and i did not realise that.

Some tutorials tend to be very short on propose since I prefer to make some of them ridiculously short. Those are usually packed only with few logical things instead of trying to pack too many different things and risking to confuse the newbie in the end. It was with great lengths that I did minimize potential confusion in my tutorials for the newbies (especially in the earliest tutorials).

Yeah, the spaceship map is a nice example of what can be possible with the editor when you make maps with more high-end stuff and customization.

It can be sometimes tricky to replace skins at times. In fact, I don't have much experience in it and actually to try a good 3-4 times (checking, remodifying to the right path, etc.) when I did the modding tutorial map (in extra tutorials) with pre-made custom skins.

In addition, I think there are other details that can go wrong that I don't remember.

Ah, sorry, completely forgot to answer.

Although the tutorials does come with the skin files that you can try yourself to import in otherwise CC does have some warcraft 3 files to mess with ... in fact, it's from those I made the somewhat incomplete modding tutorial map.

Other than that, guys, feel free to ask for requests of specific tutorials and such since otherwise, it's unlikely ill do much with the current  tutorials.

Any ideas on when we get more of these tutorials? So far they've been extremely helpful and I'd really like to see some more.

To be honest, it is pretty much work on near-permanent stop especially since almost nobody did show any real interest for a long time.

Although now, which topic of a new tutorial you would like to be made? I am likely to have enough motivation to do only one or two more key tutorials these times.
