I don't care if this flies on my screen while someone tweets on their facebook while ordering a pizza while clicking on a banner ad while selling out while blogging while chatting in a kelloggs sponsored chat room - as long as I get a quality science fiction game with a versatile map editor, which we did.

Everything is mainstreaming.  Facebook has its hands in all mediums of technology.  This is actually not a surprise.  I know we like to think of ourselves as the gamer outside of the mainstream, but the reality is StarCraft 2 will be a notable and casually played franchise like the Wii was.  WoW became a household name, and Blizzard intends to build on that with StarCraft 2.

It's actually a good thing.  We'll get more hits off of Campaign Creations.  CC does have a Facebook page ya'know. ;)

Actually I think the marketplace is going to devalue sites like CC somewhat, especially to audiences who aren't aware of their existence. ("Why go to a site when I can just dl it here?")

'Course, without chat channels, communication inside sc2 will be virtually non-existent outside of established friend groups.

No, I'm pretty sure a good portion of us are casual <.< even here. Or at least as casual as long term gaming gets =P

=/ That's pretty pessemistic, I'm pretty sure they'll at least put the basic crap in, though honestly with how they downgraded simple features like the pinging (in TFT/HON you can ping by just using alt+mouse click not alt+G+click T_T example) hoping for anything more would be silly.

Between the gameplay, battle.net 2.0, and the editor, I have no hope left for Blizzard. At least not the team responsible for sc2. It is a trainwreck is what it is. There is no reasoning or logic behind half the things they did, and the logic for the other half is so awful and brain damaging you wonder how these morons made it into a multi-billion dollar company at all.

I mean, looking at it now, the thing that baffles me more than battle.net 2.0's shitty ui and mangled feature list, more than the editor's haphazard mess, is how Browder ever made it into Blizzard at all. Doesn't anyone in the company realize WHY the C&C games sucked balls? Why would they even trust someone outside with such an important job in the first place?

He must be really good at sucking cock or he must have a huge wallet because that doesn't make any sense at all.

Ultimately, what it drums down to is this:

If something does change it won't be because of anything we do as modders. It will be a long, painful change, brought forth by sites like TL.

Honestly: what AA7 said. Mainstream, casual gaming is here and it's here to stay. Look at Farmville with its 70 MILLION PLAYERS - compare that with ~15 million copies of Modern Warfare 2 (the biggest selling game of history, if not just recently), or 11 million players on WOW. Granted, Farmville is free and has the perfect social platform (Facebook) to draw in new players, but 70 million is amazingly high for any game. All game companies are investing in social elements for games, in fact they have been doing so for years but now they're directly targeting the people using the likes of Facebook, so this really shouldn't be a surprise. Split\Second has Facebook built in to it and that's a big budget racing game.

Xel, you don't know casual gamers. There are people who buy maybe four games a year. They will play one game once per month for an hour. To them, games are just a diversion, a very mild form of entertainment when there's nothing on TV. That's fair enough, people have different social priorities and recreational tastes in life, while some of us take it more seriously and have grown up playing them for thousands of hours. Then you can go and see poopsockers who ... well, you'd rather not see them, just hear about their existence at most.

Don't you always end up raging against developers for not matching your precise requirements of a game? :P

You're welcome to your opinion, but gameplay tastes aside, SC2 will be far, far from a trainwreck financially. It's a Blizzard game so it's highly anticipated (I've seen it at the top of the Gameplay pre-ordered chart for months) and that's not even counting the virtual sport religion its predecessor has become in South Korea. I doubt it will tank like C&C4, but it definitely will sell millions

Edit: Here's what some game developers are doing for social aspects of gaming:
