I remember visiting the WarCraft III website every week looking for new news on the "world domination" game back when it was an actual globe you were intended to play on and more of a squad-based gameplay. That concept still strikes me as something of interest, but I always did feel it would break immersion to have an actual sphere of a map to play on. That is, of course, unless I missed an obvious point somewhere where it might have stated maps would simply have the curvature of a world as opposed to being a huge sphere you play on.
