[New Campaign] StarCraft I: Echoes of the Swarm (new name)

Postby omega20 » Sun May 23, 2010 2:01 pm

This campaign is a 10 level map set for StarCraft. The storyline takes place during Terran Episode I. You will play as the Zerg. As a newborn Zerg Cerebrate under the Overmind command, your task is to invade the Terran worlds in order to assimilate the Terran race. Within them lies the key to victory over the mighty Protoss. Experience the battles of Mar Sara, Antiga Prime and Tarsonis from a different point of view. Guide the Swarm to victory over the dead bodies of your enemies, and achieve the sacred mission of the Swarm to reach perfection.

At first I had planned to announce it when finished, but the sudden announcement of StarCraft II release date has forced me to change my plans. At first only 10 maps will be made, but If I have enough time, I may add some sort of bonus maps. This is the current progress of the campaign:

PROGRESS: 100%

CHARACTERS

Zerg Swarm

Image
Overmind
Unit:: He does not appears on his physical form
The indisputable master and ruler of the Swarm. He will guide you and command you through the coming struggle.

Image
Araq
Unit: Cerebrate
Cerebrate of the brood known among the Terrans as the Jormungand Brood. He will counsel you in your early missions, and will serve as your advisor during the entire campaign.

Image
Grothesk
Unit: Defiler
Defiler from Daggoth's Tiamat Brood. He has been granted some degree of sentience and control over lesser strains. Entirely loyal to the Swarm, he harbors a deep hate for the Protoss, and will do whatever he is ordered to.

Terran Confederacy/Sons of Korhal

Image
Edmund Duke
Unit: Battlecruiser Norad II
Terran General, commander of Confederate Alpha Squadron. He commands his troops ruthlessly and relentlessly. He is usually seen in his flagship, the battlecruiser Norad II. He will make a minor appearance in the campaign.

Terran Confederacy

Image
Arnold Hawthorne
Unit: Battlecruiser Executor
Terran General, Chief of Staff of the Confederate Armed Forces and one of the most powerful and influencing men in the Koprulu Sector. A competent officer, he has control of his own personal army and fleet and even his own scientist research division. He is said to be working on a dark project involving the Zerg, which at this time of the war, with Zerg, Protoss and Terran rebel forces growing larger, stronger and closer to the Confederate capitol world, may give a light of hope to the crumbling Terran Confederacy.

Protoss Expeditionary Fleet

Image
Venezoth
Unit: Zealot, Carrier Ellareon
One of the main anatagonists of the campaign, on the Protoss side. He is a Protoss Praetor in charge of a sizeable part of the Protoss Expeditionary Fleet under Executor Tassadar. If against the odds, he will fight until the end in order to defend the honor and bravety of the Protoss Empire.

Speak of the devil, I've been dying to find a good Zerg-themed campaign to play.  I sincerely hope you finish this project Omega.  The Zerg need more of a spotlight in the realm of custom campaigns. :D
Ours is a thought-tormented age.

Agreed. I have always loved Zerg-themed campaigns, but there are not many of them out there. That's one of the reasons I decided to go for a Zerg campaign. :)

Now, I hope to finish this one. Really, I've finished the terrain for all 10 maps, al of them made from scratch. Not recycled maps. I think I have progressed too much to back down now. I hope to release it within the next few weeks. ;)

Heyo. Can`t wait to play it. :)
Do you guys played some german campaigns from broodwar.de? There are several Zerg-based camps, and there are really good ones too!

Really good, indeed. I had never before announced a campaign at this stage of development. :)

I must admit I'm progressing very quickly. In fact, one day I got full of inspiration and made the terrain and unit placement for all maps until 6th one (save for mission 2, which is, in fact, the "Desperate Alliance" map from Vanilla SC just a bit modified to satisfy my tastes). The remaining ones I have been doing quietly until just yesterday. ;)

Well, I have check those. They have good terrain and nice unit placement. Unfortunately, unless you can provide me with English versions of those I will refrain from playing those at least until I'm able to traduce them (I don't understand German, ya know? :P) Thank you for your consideration though. :)

Maybe, but campaigns are not just gameplay. They are also full stories, with their own plots, characters, places, events, etc... You must actually understand the storyline to better comprehend the gameplay of the campaign: why are you doing this thing or that other thing, why are you going here or there. If I don't understand a campaign because it is written in a language I don't comprehend I will most surely refrain from playing it, at least until I'm able to.

Thank you. ;)

By the way since I'll frequently change the progress info, I'll move the maps' progress data to the first post, so it can be accesed easily. ;)

I understand your point, and I agree. When you play a campaign with another language, even when you do not understand a single word from it, you make/ realize concluisons about what is happening, the storyline itself can be obvius/reasonoble when you played a lot of camps. :)
Btw, if you need testing, feel free to add me to your messenger list. :)

I've finally decided to implement the bonus mission to the campaign, since I find it an interesting feature to it. I'm slowly progressing in this project since I don't have much time right now. I'll resume full work on the weekend, when I've more time at my disposal. ;) Expect a new progress update my Monday.

Some kind of weird bug with ScmDraft?

Postby omega20 » Sun May 30, 2010 5:40 am

It seems like I'm experiencing some sort of weird bug with ScmDraft. When I try to change one of the players default color (mainly yellow to green, but it happens to others as well), it looks changed in ScmDraft. However, even after I had make sure I have saved it, the player color I have changed is still the default one in-game (but in the editor it still shows up as green). That happens with EVERY map of the campaign except for the first one. What's happening?

not sure but i seem to remember that the colors change back to normal once you open&save the map in regular staredit. somehow, staredit undoes some changes made in scmdraft. dunno if that helps.

Yeah, I thought it at first. But I deemed it as impossible. Thing is that I DON'T open them with staredit after saving them with scmdraft.

curious. the obvious question would be, what did you do different in the first map?

:)

That's what I'm attempting to guess, but I did found nothing for now. :P

It's not really so much of a bug, since the maps will still be playable with the default player colors. I'm just annoyed to see this to happen since I haven't experienced it before.
