The Game Maker's Toolkit video makes an excellent point about combat decisions being the linchpin of Doom's fun. Part of making those decisions is enemy readability -- being able to tell what you're up against and quickly planning how to deal with it.
The Doom 4 video shows a very atmsopheric level, but it's so dark and the enemies blend into the shadows that combat appears far more reactionary. The enemies don't look nearly as distinct from one another, with the same fleshy pink, tan, red, and gray palette, further homogenized under a wash of harsh dynamic lighting.
