Of BAFTA, Will Wright, and games

Post by JimmyJames »

A little background before I give you the hyperlink...

BAFTA is an acronym for (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). Think of it as the British version of the Oscars or Golden Globes... it's pretty big and might become bigger this year because of the WGA (Writer's Guild of America) strike affecting the American awards ceremonies (along with TV and Movies as a whole). Looking on the brighter side of things, one thing that BAFTA has over the Oscars and Golden Globes is its recent (since 1998) recognition of Video Games as a form of art. With that addition, they had the ability and honor to induct Will Wright, the game design master of our time, into their BAFTA Fellowship. Will Wright became the first game designer to be awarded the Fellowship. In his inaugural address into the Fellowship, he had one clear message: Games are not stories.

This video presents a little about Will Wright's philosophy on what games are and it also gives Wright's demonstration on his upcoming game releasing simultaneously for Mac and PC.

To correlate with my previous topic on Campaign Standards of Today, many replies were debating whether gameplay or story was more important and this topic and article archive just clearly seperates the two different media. Wright states, not much game design quality theory has been made as of yet... although there are colleges out there with game design classes nowadays. As for my school,  University of California, Santa Cruz, they implemented a major of Computer Game Design major for undergraduates to declare. I'm not too sure about the program so if anybody has information about Computer Game Design education around the world, please educate me!
