Today, history was made...

Postby AA7Dragoon » Wed May 26, 2010 4:28 pm

Sweet justice.  After all these years of being the underdog, at last, the naysayers and doomsdays prophets have been silenced.

BBC News - Apple passes Microsoft to be biggest tech company

Apple has pushed past arch-rival Microsoft to become the world's biggest technology company.

Changes in the share price values of the two in Wednesday's choppy trading left the total value of Apple at $222bn (£154bn).

Microsoft is now valued by investors at $219bn.

The worth, known as market capitalisation, is calculated by multiplying the number of shares in a company by the current share price.

Although Apple shares closed down 0.4%, Microsoft fell by 4%.

Apple, which makes computers, iPods, iPhones and now iPads, almost went out of business in the 1990s.

Its growth is partly owing to the launch of the stylish iPod in 2001.

Its compatability with existing - but not mass-selling - Apple computers lead customers to engage with them, just as Microsoft's products looked set for long-term dominance.

See what overpriced garbage cell phones can do for you? Now it's going to encourage everyone else to do the same.

Oh wait.

You do realize that this means that Microsoft is now the courageous underdog fighting against the evil, greedy and corrupt corporate powers of Apple?

I always thought it was Linux playing the role of the courageous underdog fighting against tyranny.

Tune in next week to see if it lasts! (it probably wont [although, Microsoft's been doing pretty crappy lately])

PC = Windows = MS

Or are you saying that Linux has something more than .5% market share?

I think he's saying that Microsoft makes just the operating system.  If you buy a PC, you're not really buying a Microsoft product.  Pretty much none of the hardware is Microsoft.  As opposed to Apple, where buying a Mac computer means buying a whole Apple product.  Not a COMPLETELY Apple product, especially if it's one with an Intel processor inside of it.  But to the best of my knowledge, you buy Mac computers from Apple.  You buy PCs from... well... Dell, Gateway, Compaq, HP, Lenovo, or you make it yourself.

So I think what he's trying to say is that Apple may be overcoming Microsoft, but that doesn't mean that Macs are overcoming PCs.

But I don't think that was the point of the article.  I think the article is saying that Apple is selling a shitton of iPhones and iPods.

Well you have to admit it, Apple knows where the big bucks are - stupid canadians/amerikans who need their phone to be able to dress themselves.

For some its actual utility, although for others, its usually a narcissistic fashion statement.  Fishing for that one moment when a friend says, 'Oooh, is that the new ?' comment.  Just like custom ring tones, fashion, not functionality.  Just another method of expressing ourselves.

Apple is the Versacci or Prada of electronics. You spend about five times what it's worth just so you can claim you're fashionable, because remember kids, being fashionable means wasting money in a recession.
